After 2 nights in Pangkor, our next destination is Penang. However, I've decided to take a de-tour to Papan, Batu Gajah, Ipoh.
Papan is a very small town, used to be a blooming mining town in the 19th century but now is a near ghost town. Before reaching the town, we passed by giant rain trees, a Kuan Yin temple , Chinese graves. Hardly any visitors paying attention to this small town. The main road with 2 rows of shop houses, some are so run down. Apparently, some tycoons bought these houses for investment.... Who knows, there might be some tin deposits some where...
Off the main road is the house of Raja Bilal (died 1911), the headsman of Papan. This great house was used as a film set in the movie Anna and the King (1999). It was restored by National Museum few years ago.
The clinic of
on the main road is no longer a clinic but was turned into a gallery.
